My travels with the TentBox roof tent: Freedom and Spontaneity

I’m a proud owner of TentBox roof tent, and I absolutely love it. From the moment we received the TentBox order, I knew our way of travelling was about to change. And let me tell you, it did—completely! And for the better.

We purchased TentBox roof tent from TentBox and received the order within a couple of days. The company has an easy installation and setting up tutorial on its website for every roof tent version, which I recommend watching.

If you’ve been wondering what it’s like to sleep on top of your car, deal with setup, or just whether it’s actually comfortable, you’re in the right place. I’ll walk you through my experience, the good or bad stuff and whether I think it’s worth the money.

Installation

TentBox view

Once you unbox the TentBox roof tent, you need to do a little prepping, and then you are ready to install it on top of your car. So far, so good. We saw the tutorial on installing the roof tent and then did precisely that.

This tent is quite heavy, approximately 50 kg, so it was a bit of a hassle to get it on the roof of our car, but we did it. We chose the Thule roof bars as they are one of the best for carrying heavy things.

It took us about 30 minutes to install the tent. It’s important to centre it, and then we’ve started clamping it on the roof bars. Overall, the tutorial was pretty straightforward, so there wasn’t much hassle to secure it on the car.

📝 Tip: Check if your car is compatible with the TentBox Lite 2.0 before purchasing.
Buy the roof bars in advance.
Arrange the tent so the ladder comes down on the passenger side.

Setting up

Now, we were ready for our first TentBox adventure. Living in Scotland, we’re spoiled for choice when it comes to camping spots. With so many places to explore and park our car for an overnight stay, the whole of Scotland becomes our playground.

We’ve decided to camp for our first time close to Loch Leven to test out our tent. Surprisingly, it is very easy to open once you are ready to camp. I kid you not; it takes about 5 minutes to set it up. First, you have to remove the hood, pull the ladder out, and then pull it down. Voila, the tent unfolds, and you are almost ready to sleep in it. The final step is to insert the rain fly poles, a total of four, two for each side of your tent.

Setting up the TentBox Lite 2.0 is so easy that you only need a few minutes each time. Which is excellent for spontaneous travel! No matter how late you arrive at the camping spot, you can set up your roof tent in five minutes and start enjoying your adventure

Sleeping inside a TentBox

Now everything is ready. You can personalize your roof tent however you want to. We have a Quecha self-inflating camping mattress for the best sleep. A couple of pillows and sleeping bags, and that’s all you need. The welcome pack from TentBox includes some cute fairy lights, which I used to decorate the inside of the tent.

The Tentbox roof tent is much warmer than a standard ground tent since it’s higher. I’ve always been super cold in ground tents, even with proper set-up and -18 degree sleeping bags. But with this TentBox, I don’t feel that cold anymore. However, it still gets pretty cold inside, so you still need proper sleeping equipment.

Surprisingly, it very comfortable sleeping in this roof tent. There is enough room for two people and other things inside. It’s also pretty easy to get inside or climb down the stairs, even in the middle of the night, without making too much noise.

It is also super easy to pack it up. It’s just the set-up in reverse: Take out all the rain fly poles and then pull up the ladder. Carefully zip the hood back up. You are now ready for your next adventure! And that’s what we did: We packed it up and went on a hike! Here is a list of  my best hikes in Scotland that I think everyone should do.

📝 Tip: Before packing it up, let the TentBox air out for a bit.
